A few of yesterdays papers on perceptual evaluations referred to the "Sound Wheel" developed by Delta's SenseLab---a Danish firm that offers an audio product testing service. I was intrigued at first simply because it was colorful and pretty. After the sessions I looked it up and found it was far more than that.

It's always a bit Twilight Zone to travel for 20 hours only to arrive at your destination at 9 o'clock in the morning. I walked up to the desk clerk at the Aaborg Hotel to check in.

"I'm sorry, sir. Your room won't be ready until about 2 PM."

The new Mr. Speakers Ether Flow and Focal Utopia and Elear have rocked my world...and the Wall of Fame. Here are the changes...

I had only two days with a pre-production Ether Flow before my house was invaded by the French. I was quite enjoying the pre-production Flow, but the Focal Elear and Utopia turned my world upside down. By the time Dan Clark, CEO and Founder of Mr. Speakers, sent the production unit my world was in a bit of an uproar. Though I didn't mention them, the Flow was ever present in my listening tests...it kept whispering to me, "It's not about "The Best" anymore, it's about character."

Well...that escalated quickly.

Anticipating incoming Focal Elears, DIYers are already starting to ask about dimensions for cable swaps. Might as well do it while I've got them here.

Just yesterday, Jude Mansilla posted measurements of the Focal Utopia and Elear with the pads swapped. Stillhart had messaged him that the he tried swapping the Utopia's pad to the Elear pad to get a little more bass. The pads just pull off and swap easy-peasy. I did it and...SWEET! Yes, the Utopia's gain a bit more bass—which was something I found them in need of in my review.

Duh. Why didn't I think of that?

And then, at 21 second in, right after she sings, "When God gave out rhythm...", two chords are gently played on the piano. My goodness, I've never heard such sensitively percussive, harmonically rich, filled with weight and substance sound from a piano. Most astonishing is the interplay of tones, harmonics, and intermodulation making the whole of the chord a rich textured wave of sound. I was transfixed until track's end.

It comes with the territory: Sometimes I just have to post things that are quick and easy to keep the pageviews coming. It's not a bad thing as long as there's a little entertainment value.

Jon Iverson and I were chatting in our weekly meeting...

"Do headphone enthusiasts dig t-shirts, " Jon asked?

I was chatting with a co-worker...

"Do headphone enthusiasts dig t-shirts?"

(He was stimulated by this headphone t-shirt image search...which has some pretty cool results.)

"Oh," I snapped back, "they love them!"
