What if Sennheiser engineers were allowed to make the best headphones they possibly could, regardless of cost?

Here's your answer.

I couldn't make it, but Mike (Anaxilus) did and has submitted this ShiitShow report...which, if I may say, is simply an outstanding offering.

Sure, I wear headphones to bed sometimes to watch movies on my iPad...and yes, there are ergonomic issues. I don't sleep with headphones on, or in (in the case of IEMs), but I know people who do. Some sort of trouble is always expressed.

Kokoon intends to change all that.

At first I thought "never going to work", but on reading it over I think it might have some good uses.

Man, you just never know what's going to show up in the headphone news feeds.

CES is a big show, there's no way to know everything that's happening there while you're there. I thought a good surf of the last two weeks of headphone news would show some additional fruit for review sample requests.

And, of course there's some newsy odds 'n ends.

I first heard of this project coming along about a year ago when I chatted with Skylar Gray (AudioQuest's chief designer on the project) at CES. I also got a personal guided tour of the NightHawk in it's most current iteration at the time a month ago at CanJam@RMAF. Astonishing then, and now, is how much innovation Skylar has managed to pack into this new headphone design. Much of it is mentioned on their NightHawk launch site, but I thought I'd take a few moments to relay my understanding of some of these design features. So, open another tab to their site and I'll talk you through what I know, and what I'd like to know more about, regarding this very interesting headphone.

Woot! Tidal opens today, let's bog its server down!

Just signed up and got my mitts on lossless streaming; checked out a few tracks I'm familiar with; damn...it's just like the CD!

Wow. Didn't see that coming. Grado tends to lay low in the headphone PR mill, but they've poked their head into the fray with the Bushmills x Grado headphone—their first ever closed-back headphone!

Editors Note: I love living in Montana, but there are a few drawbacks. One big one for me at the moment is that all the PR junkets introducing new products usually happen thousands of miles away in New York. Bummer. Fortunately, a good friend and and long time headphone hobbyist Dinny FitzPatrick (known as "The Monkey" on Head-Fi) lives there, and has volunteered to lend a hand scouting out the new gear that shows up in the Big Apple. Last month he attended the release of a bunch of new gear from Logitech/UE. His report follows...and just like a monkey, it's quite entertaining.

But, again, like a Monkey, he's likely to be rather difficult to restrain, so I've given him a long leash, and we're likely to see a variety of writings from him. Welcome aboard Dinny! The banana budget is approved, write to your heart's content.

Ed Note: I've long been enamored by the incredibly lifelike recordings produced by brothers David and Norman on their Chesky record label. They regularly put great musicians in great spaces, and deftly record the moment with minimal mikes and astonishing results.

I knew they'd get ahead ... Steve Guttenberg now tells us exactly what kind of head they got.

You can't listen to a headphone without plugging it into an amplifier of some kind: an iPod, portable device or a maxed out home amp. It's really the combination of the two we hear, so when we talk about the "sound" of a headphone, it's more about the sound of a headphone/amp system.

Lets get started.

I was fairly impressed when I recently reviewed the Sony EX600 and EX1000 in-ear dynamic driver headphones. But I've always felt that for high-fidelity in-ear listening the balanced armature driver headphones bested the dynamic drivers. Well, Sony has taken a big step and just released a full line of balanced armature in-ear headphones.

I'm looking forward to getting my ears on them.

I'm very pleased to have Todd the Vinyl Junkie nearby. Thursday nights he has listening sessions of newly arrived vinyl and serves imported Belgian beer in proper glasses ... so that's cool. But in this case, I'm pleased because I get first dibs listening to Pete Millett's newest creation for Apex Hi-Fi and TTVJ: The Butte headphone amplifier.
