I feel compelled to do this about once a year...if it just save one person it's worth it. As I read my headphone news feeds it seem like I read of someone killed by walking on train tracks wearing headphones about once a week. Often it's a youngster. It seems so avoidable: Just don't walk on train tracks...period. But in a number of cases—one below—someone dashes across the tracks to catch a bus or talk to a friend and the headphones prevent hearing the oncoming train.

For a variety of perfectly understandable reasons, Audeze was only able to provide one LCD-4 for measurement and evaluation. I now have 3 LCD-4s measured and have put them in this AllLCD4Measurements.pdf.

Big thanks to a headphone forum member who reached out with an offer to share his Utopia and LCD-4 for me to measure. One more for the Focal for the Utopia measurements .pdf booklet. It's A1BEHF000384 on page 10 and 11. Generally, it matches the rest of the Utopias measured with a couple small things to note. I'll reveal the LCD-4 measurements when I have enough samples for a good comparison.

Okie dokie. After having measured seven Focal Utopias, some of them numerous times, two with serial numbers lower than the review pair, it now feels like I have enough information to draw some conclusions and move forward.

Well, there's certainly been a whirlwind of calls and emails around the old InnerFidelity lab this week. I thought it would be a good idea to put a fine point on where we're at, and talk a bit about where we can go from here.

Not a lot of new measurements in this update as most were also reviewed, but a couple of new ones of interest.

Last week, when I posted about AKG K1000 measurements, many readers were perplexed about the apparent low frequency isolation with what ought to be about the most open headphone you could possibly have. How in the world could it be providing any isolation at all, much less in the low frequencies that are particularly had to shut out?

Frankly, I thought I must have just done something stupid and there was something wrong with the measurements (though I did double-check at the time). So, I remeasured again this weekend...and basically got the same result!

Sometimes my job is quite humbling. Like when headphone enthusiast yaluen decided to ship me a dozen headphones—many very rare and collectable—from his collection for measurement.

We're in for a real treat this week. Head-Fi member yaluen has most graciously shipped a treasure trove of vintage headphones for me to measure and share with InnerFidelity readers. We'll get to the sweet cache of Stax cans in short order, but I figured I'd offer up this sweet set of measurements as an appetizer.

You never know what kind of rabbit hole you might fall into on a scrounge through the news feeds. Turns out, according to research from the University of Caen and the University of Strasbourg, both in France, that you can reduce stress in horses during trailering and farrier work (horse shoeing) by letting them hear music. Tests were conducted with 48 horses at various time using horse headphones, ear plugs, and with no apparatus as a control. Stress was monitored in various ways including heart rate. Results showed reduced stress and better recovery from stress was achieved with the use of horse headphones and music.

Research says we hear the beat in the bass, and, in another paper, we hear the melody in the highest note. Moreover—and this is the surprising bit—these perceptions appear to occur very early in the peripheral perception process well before we cognitively appreciate the music.

After determining the JBL Everest Elite 700 was good enough to poke it's way onto the Wall of Fame, I came to realize I wasn't certain where to put it. Should it be on the Wireless page? Or should it be on the Noise Canceling page? Or both?

After my CES experience with Ossic, Dirac, Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Surround, and the AKG N90Q, I've begun to spend a little time rooting around for potentially interesting headphones and requesting samples for further investigation.

There's just no question.

Four years in the making, this all-new Beryllium dome driver headphone design from Focal has completely disrupted the flagship headphone category. The Utopia ($3999) is the best headphone I've ever heard...by a significant margin.
