CanJam at RMAF - The Indispensable One: John Purtill

John "JP11801" "Johnny Numbers" "JPnums" Purtill
I know for a fact that if you ask Jude Mansilla (the main man at Head-Fi) who's responsible for the success of CanJam at RMAF, he'll point his finger directly at John Purtill. For the last three years, John has steadily guided this nascent juggernaut of Headphonedom from obscurity into a solid representation of what headphones can mean to the high-end audio world.

For attendees, the show lasts just a couple of days. For the exhibitors and press, a couple of weeks. But for John, this show lasts all year long. Before one ends, he's already thinking about how to do it better next time. He's a competent dude, too. He thinks carefully and deeply about the fine tuning needed to really make a show like this work and gain in it's attractiveness to the audiophile masses. And when it comes to showtime, he's cool, calm, and collected as he navigates his way through missing shipments, A.C. power requirements, and all manner of detail none of us could imagine.

But here's the more relevant bit, John is a great guy and cares deeply about the most important aspect of an event like this: Having FUN!!! For example, his genius shined through yet again this year with the advent of FREE BEER at 4PM Saturday afternoon in the CanJam area. Not cheap Budweiser mind you, no, micro-brewed IPA. It was yummy. The vibe of good times was palpable in the room within the hour.

I couldn't be happier that Johnny Numbers mans the helm of this wonderful event. I'll raise a glass of barley pop in his honor this evening, and I hope you'll join me in congratulating him on a job well done in the comments below.

Thank you so much, John, CanJam at RMAF did exhibit the importance of headphones to high-end listening this year, and I know next year will be even better ... when you've figured out where you're going to put all the new exhibitors.

Is it just me, or does that Sherwood fellow bear a striking resemblance to Nick Frost? At least in the above photo he does anyway. I mean that in a totally complimentary way - Mr. Frost being one of my favorite actors.
