Brian Gluck at Headphones.com shot me an email last week suggesting we make the contest more open ended by asking a question and selecting a winner from the various answers. D'oh! Why didn't I think of that?

So I thunk and thunk, and thunk some more ... and I think I've thunk of a question. It's actually one I've thought about for a long time.

I've been listening to a lot of mid-priced, sealed headphones lately, and these just keep jumping out at me. They say DJ on the side and have a mono switch, but I'm not buying it ... these are just plain good headphones.

Pioneer, eh? Who'da thunk it.

Aw geez ... I feel so lucky. I teared up a bit as I unwrapped six DIY headphones from dBel84 on Head-Fi. The work, love, and enthusiasm of this owner/modifier/enthusiast just radiated from them. I feel so privileged to have people send me their pride and joy DIY cans. It's a very special thing for me personally.

Come, let's have a look at this very personal "personal audio" collection.

My good buddy Todd the Vinyl Junkie (TTVJ) had donned his Hawaiian shirt in my honor my little visit to sample his new Pete Millett designed FET output amp.

It was a lovely 35 mile motorcycle jaunt on the interstate through flooded pastureland to Three Forks, Montana; and lovelier still to hear the Arête when I arrived at TTVJ HQ. Let's have a quick look at this new product ....

It's time again to offer up Brian's very generous offer of a $50 gift certificate at Headphones.com to some lucky winner.

Only this time I'm hoping it's less luck, and more brain cells.

When the stewardess asks me if I'd like to buy a pair of headphones for two dollars, I usually say no thanks and smile. She has no idea how good a pair of custom in-ear monitors sound.

And then I thought, "Well, I really have no idea how good her headphones sound either." So, I bought a pair, and brought them home to test.

Oh my!

Simply put, I'm stunned.

It's hard to make a good sounding sealed headphone, and much more so a small, supra-aural (on-ear) type. They all seem to falter sonically somewhere. In-ear headphones were the only way to get really good portable sound ...

... until now.

Scott Wilkinson has kindly asked me to join him on his "Home Theater Geeks" podcast over on TWiT.tv. It's really more than just a podcast however, Scott will be interviewing me via Skype, and both the audio and video will be available.

The show will be broadcast on TWiT.tv live TODAY! Monday, June 20 at 2:15pm Pacific Time (2115UTC). Both audio and video will be available afterward on the Home Theater Geek page on TWiT; for real Podcast is available through iTunes here.

I reckon we'll be talking about headphones and headphone geeks, but you never know.

See you then!

I was rummaging around amongst HeadRoom's demo cans the other day, and stumbled upon a Beyerdynamic DJX-1.

"Hmm..." I sez to myself, "I don't remember ever seeing these before. I wonder what they sound like."

Once home, I pulled them out of the box and had a listen ... wow, these aren't bad at all. I wonder why I've never heard them before?

Brian Gluck over at www.headphones.com has been very helpful to me as I've worked to start up InnerFidelity. He's a sponsor here; he's sent me gear to audition; but he said he'd like to do more.

And he's putting money where his mouth is ...
