Not only has enthusiast 4nradio breathed life into this odd assortment of bits from previously dead or discontinued headphones, but unlike the good doctor of yore, he has fallen in love with the monster he brought to life, and given it character and personality.

Enthusiasts recently mourned the death of the Denon AH-D1001 --- a really good sounding sealed headphone at just above $100. Lament no more. This Foster OEM design (model 443741) has found rebirth as the Creative Aurvana Live!

It's been rumored about for ages, played at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas a couple of years ago, but sometime in September Magnepan will begin shipping the Mini Maggie System ($1,495). It's a desktop speaker system, albeit one designed to satisfy the most demanding audiophile tastes.

I visited the Magnepan factory in White Bear Lake, Minnesota in late July to spend some quality time with the Mini Maggies.

Any headphone enthusiast will tell you one of the unque characteristics of cans is their ability to take you somewhere else. To secret you away to another place ... the place where your music is all around and you are subsumed in its spell.

A classic in the world of professional and enthusiast headphones, and probably the world's most popular DJ headphone, the HD 25 has remained in the Sennheiser line-up in a small variety of incarnations since 1987 ... and deservedly so.

When I first heard them about 15 years ago there were very few expensive headphones available, so they seemed pricy at the time. They sounded great though and were a solid recommendation. In today's world of high-priced fashion headphones, and even higher priced high-end headphones, these very good sounding and highly functional cans seem like a real bargain for professional and audio enthusiast alike.

Let's take a look at the latest incarnation, the Sennheiser/adidas HD 25 Original.

It's starting to happen more and more. A silent disco is where the DJ plays music that is sent to an FM transmitter, and dancers wear headphones tied to FM radios. Sometimes two DJs spin discs and compete for the most people tuned in. I suppose you can tell who's winning by the beat of the bobbing crowd. I think it sounds like fun.

A decade or more ago, I thought the Sennheiser HD 25-1 was very expensive at $249. These days, with rapper cans and four figure high-end headphones, $249 for a really good pair of headphones looks quite reasonable.

People seem far more willing to spend money on headphones these days. The general public finds more value in headphones these days. Why?

In a recent contest asking for ideas, this comment was made by yuriv:

    "Have readers write articles, and then submit them to you, Tyll, the editor. They can be anything--product reviews, technical explanations, how-to guides, etc. There can even be videos. Of course, if they're headphone reviews, it would be nice if they were sent over for measurements."

    "Since Wes Phillips isn't available, how about readers as contributors? You pick the finalists every round, then publish their articles here. Hopefully, a few of them will meet your standards."

Thanks yuriv, (not a contest winner, but worth a consolation prize, email on the way) I think I'm going to do something very much like that ...
