With the 2019 Grammy’s just passed and a recent New York Times op-ed bemoaning the loudness wars and poor sound quality of today’s top artists, I figured it was the perfect time to put together a list of music recommendations.

At risk of seeming like a bit of an overzealous fan of iFi, I’ve got yet another product review. What can I say – they make fairly priced gear and they’re always eager to send new toys for review. In any case, I’ve been both intrigued and puzzled by these two little units for the past couple months, partially why I’ve not posted much content recently.

Goldfinger is the third James Bond film starring Sean Connery and the 1964 spy thriller is one of my favourite films of all time, not the least of the reasons being the movie’s iconic antagonist Auric Goldfinger played by Gert Fröbe.

If you have never heard of the SoCal event called NAMM, fret not. The annual show-and-tell from the National Association of Musician Merchants in Anaheim California lays on the far fringes of audiophiledom. It is fairly big however, occupying more than one of the massive convention halls on site in Orange County with 115,000 attendees and 7,000 brands represented.

French hi-fi manufacturing powerhouse Focal has been focused on delivering powerful, transparent drivers for both their two-channel loudspeaker designs and their highly-competitive headphones for many years and with their new Elegia closed-back headphone they continue that tradition.

What's it like to test 6,000 headphones? Helmuts Bēms takes audio playback very seriously, he should, he's probably logged more hours testing more headphones than almost anyone on the planet.

Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Play apps both listen very carefully to what we’re all saying and while Roon does something altogether different than voice-activated access to data of all types, it seems Roon Labs are listening just as intently to their (audiophile) audience.

This is a more than capable phono/headphone preamplifier at $600 USD, at $299 USD it is an out-and-out bargain and why I named it to my InnerFidelity Editor’s Choice 2018 – Under $500 list. Dynamic, punchy, nuanced when it needs to be, this simply makes listening to LPs a fun, engaging and educational experience as it revealed a lot of detail in its resolution-abilities that had me relaxing and enjoying albums that I hadn’t hauled down from the shelves for years.

The trek out to CES in Las Vegas isn’t usually as bad as actually getting around at the show. The event is absolutely massive in comparison to the usual audiophile circuit, and most of the new headphone tech is housed in the very populated South Hall of the LV Convention Center. The South Hall at CES 2019 (and the direction of headphones in general) can be summed up in two words for 2019 – “True Wireless.”

Bluetooth continues to muscle in on high-end headphone audio as a viable high-resolution alternative to getting tangled up in cables and Audeze is wasting no time capitalizing on the success of it’s Mobius wireless gaming headset’s cutting-edge Bluetooth implementation by spreading that wireless love to the both popular and critically-acclaimed iSINE series of micro planar-magnetic IEMs.
