And that, dear reader, should be your take-away: I'm not sure of where its value is regarding headphone stuff directly, but its a very good time for an audio geek! If you want to have a really fun look at two-channel audio gear and experience a whole bunch of like-minded folks, T.H.E. Show Newport 2017 should be at the top of your list! A really fun time by design...thanks, Richard.
Here's a brave adventure: Bring an entire line of headphones retailing below $100 each to a high-end audio show. 1More is a San Diego based company specializing in affordable headphones. I've measured some of their previous IEM models and they were pretty good at the price points. But the line is largely refreshed and after a listen at T.H.E. Show I'm convinced another round of listening and measurement is in order.
It's been quite a while since I've seen David Maudlin, Founder and CEO of Cypher Labs, at a show, and, boy, he's been a busy little beaver. Known initially for their small portable headphone amps and DACs like the Picollo DAC ($399) among quite a few others, David has branched out and now has a couple of desktop offerings and some new IEMs.
In the years since I've had the opportunity to chat with Richard numerous times. I'm really not a fan of bullshit, blowhards, and artifice...which is to say, I really enjoyed my times with Richard. He was about as cuddly as bag of razor blades, but he was the no shit real deal. A rich/complex/imperfect human doing his double-damned best working with others to make our industry work, and trying to deliver a good time as well...because if you're not having fun while you work then why bother?
And then, just when he seems to have reached his stride with planar magnetics, he's now off on the hunt for a great electrostatic headphone offering. It makes my head hurt. Imagine just finishing a mountain climbing adventure just to turn around the next day and start out on another major journey.
