The concept of year end lists, or any sort of artist rankings, are often interesting but inherently flawed. While the concept of highlighting noteworthy works is itself quite valuable, specific numerical rankings tend to make me question the endeavour. While I think Tootsie, Clockwork Orange, and Saving Private Ryan are all great films, seeing them ranked in that order in the AFI Top 100 films list just seems like an argument waiting to happen.

Unlike my inaugural mix for AudioStream (This Is a Test), which assembled immaculately produced music ideal for evaluating hi-fi gear, this next instalment is less suited for testing a pair of headphones than it is for enjoying them.

I recently attended Summer NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) in Nashville, Tennessee. NAMM may be an unfamiliar name to you – it's a professional audio and music equipment convention, not consumer. And while the music industry has its own issues, if you want to see more diverse crowds, go to the pro-audio world. What you’ll also find in the pro-audio world is a lot of discussion about music, gear and audio that is friendly and open, even when people are disagreeing.

With Spring here and Summer fast approaching, it is a good time to ponder the things to come and reflect on the year that has been… what better way to do that then with a selection of curated mixes celebrating the four seasons and the unique mindset which each engenders in all of us.

Between all the disparate ways we hear our daily soundtracks as we move through our lives, we cover quite a wide variety of music and listening modes.

As far as religious holidays go, none have been as potently marketed as Christmas. Defined by an endless stream of catchy original songs, unabashed commercialism, and a magical mascot, Christmas often seems more like a Disney production than an especially holy endeavour. Irrespective of our individual beliefs, Christmas exists as an open-source holiday that everybody is able to celebrate in different ways and for different reasons.

A quick intro: Scott Eastlick has been writing for AudioStream on many things music-related, creating original sonic mixes for our readers there to enjoy and to explore, and moving forward may even scribble the odd hardware review. Please welcome him here to InnerFidelity, as I thought some of the mixes he's been doing for AudioStream would be a great fit here too.

With the 2019 Grammy’s just passed and a recent New York Times op-ed bemoaning the loudness wars and poor sound quality of today’s top artists, I figured it was the perfect time to put together a list of music recommendations.
