The Denver airport is one of the strangest I’ve ever encountered, with a bizarre history rife with grist for online conspiracy-theorists and it’s a haul from the airport to the Denver Marriot Tech Centre, but once you’ve navigated those minor obstacles one of the best audiophile trade shows in North America awaits you.

Astell & Kern seem like a company hell bent on introducing new models that are feature-packed based on feedback from both existing customers and those they are courting to embrace the brand.

This combo was getting a lot of attention and it was always a challenge to slide into the driver’s seat and get some head time, but the wait was worth it as this set-up was producing some of most timbral and tonally accurate sound coupled with astonishing resolution.

I’ve always enjoyed Campfire Audio’s relaxed and casual company culture – my experiences with them have always been from one personal audio enthusiast to another, never corporate or stiff.

The Chord table at CANJAM inside the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest was filled with variations of their popular Hugo and Dave DAC/Amp combos. I tried out the Hugo TT 2 and M Scaler combo with a Pair of Ether 2 headphones and this was easily another Best of Show sound for me.

The middle-aged man browsing cloud-based files was in absolutely no rush to finish his session with the Bartok, taking a good 10 minutes to critically listen to several tracks before resignedly leaving the station to make way for two impatient teens who were crowding him and couldn’t have been more than 15 years old and took another 20 minutes taking turns listening through the Bartok.

Lager or pilsner? Single malt or blended whisky? Is one better than the other? Depends on my mood, what I’ve eaten and a myriad of other factors that all coalesce into a maelstrom of synaptic firings that determine what I end up choosing. Such is the complexity of the mind.

I have had numerous emails and a lengthy Q&A with Dr. Fang Bian of HIFIMAN regarding the company and several of its products, but despite all this electronic back-and-forth, I was not prepared for the huge smile that greeted me from him as I came up to the HIFIMAN booth at CANJAM in the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.

I always make a point to stop by the iFi booth as the folks who work there are super friendly and I enjoy their products.

The Meze booth stood out to me upon first walking into CANJAM at RMAF this year because their managing director, Mircea Fanatan, was standing there looking very peaceful amid a sea of headphone-enthusiast chaos which was buffeting every surface and corner of the event. It practically felt windy in there.

The well-dressed twenty-something’s eyes were wide open and he was rocking back-and-forth in his chair like he was at a speed-meta concert with a look of euphoria on his face. “You gotta hear this!” He yelled at his friend who was hovering over his shoulder checking the track listing on the laptop that was part of the system feeding the new MrSpeakers Ether 2 headphones he was demoing.

Walkman.

That’s pretty much all you have to say to anyone to trigger a universal response to conjure up the name SONY.

I’ve known Zach Mehrbach, the founder and owner of ZMF for several years now, and he’s quite an interesting guy, having at various times been a professor of film at Columbia, a professional luthier, and now a headphone maker.
