A knock at the front door usually elicits a smile from me, a groan from my family and loud, vicious barking from our dog. This time the knock was courtesy FedEx and HIFIMAN who have just shipped me their brand new HE1000se and HE6se headphones for review.

Wasting no time in making new product announcements, HIFIMAN has hit the ground running at speed in the mile-high city with multiple launches of their latest products. The company rolled four major announcements today, so let’s touch briefly on each one based on their press releases and then follow up with more detail after RMAF.

Dan Clark of MrSpeakers is a difficult man to get a hold of as he’s constantly working. Few people in the industry spend as much time as Clark honing the bleeding edge of planar-magnetic headphone design as he does and the company always has something in the works. Whether it’s a new model, or upgrades for existing customers.

It seems Sony has decided to enter the über high-end headphone amp market with the $8,000 USD DMP-Z1 from their “Signature Series” and the Internet is blowing up a bit because of it.

High fidelity seems to be more and more focused on the inclusion of headphone amplification within not only the strict definitions of preamplifiers or integrated amplifiers, but also for the decidedly digital side of things, where more seems to get packed into the equation for the discerning consumer.

This is a pretty cool headphone. Certainly seems like a forward thinking push towards smart headphones to me. I sure as heck didn't want my experience with them to be on a noisy trade show floor. Fortunately, Audeze is in Orange County not too far from CanJam in downtown L.A., so I arranged a visit to their factory before the show for a one-on-one audition of these new cans.

We're about 5 days in on the Audeze Mobius Indigogo campaign, and 2100+ backers have already raised $550k, blowing through the $50K goal by an order of magnitude! Doesn't surprise me a bit, Sankar Thiagasamudram, Audeze's CEO, told me of these forthcoming headphones some time ago and I've been chomping at the bit to have a listen.

Yesssssss!

I've kvetched quite a bit about the need for some killer headphones in the $500-$1000 price range. Seems like headphone makers just jumped by that price category in an ever more intense race to the top...of your willingness to break your wallet. Looks like we're going to get some relief from MrSpeakers.
