I left the Sennheiser booth and tuned the corner. There it was, the SMS by 50 Cent. The little behemoth of the rapper can world. My eyes scanned the cavernous booth, and to my mind only one word occurred ...

To my camera, it was dark at the bottom of the escalator at The Home Entertainment Show being held at the Flamingo.

To my heart, it was well lit by the smiles of good friends and ex-coworkers Jorge Cervera and Ben Thiede.

It's not easy to find cheap stuff that sounds good. There're just soooo many cheap headphones that it's impossible to get your ears on all of them for a listen.

Fortunately, I got a hot tip on these.

I mentioned in an earlier post that there are two types of in-ear monitor: balanced armature and dynamic driver. Well, there's actually a third type ...

... an in-ear monitor with both dynamic and balanced armature drivers!

There's no doubt I want Audio Technica's ATH-M50 on my wall of fame, I had but to find the AT booth and ask. The question in my head as I walked up to their display was whether there was anything else of interest.

I was glad to see and hear a couple of new goodies from Audio Technica.

I had two motives for showing up at the Altec Lansing booth: inexpensive computer speakers, and expensive custom in-ear monitors.

Check and check.

Shocked, I tell ya. I've not heard too many Philips headphones in the past, but the ones I have heard were pretty disappointing. Then, BAM! At this year's CES Philips introduced five new lines of headphones. There were a couple of clunkers, but only a couple. Headphone after headphone in these new line-ups ranged from very good, to unbelievably good, and the pricing was surprisingly affordable.

At one point, I was giggling like a little girl.

All I had to go on was a vague remembrance of a PR agent who came from Montana, and a spot blotted out on my CES floor show map indicating the location of the California Headphone Company. I was met by a small gaggle of fresh-faced farm girls in baseball hats (or ladies so costumed), the rear end of an old Ford pick-up, and Britt's cheery voice saying, "Oh, hi Tyll! So glad you came to see us."

I'm well aware of master clocks used for video post production, but was unaware that similar master clocks are now used in digital recording studios. Antelope makes some of the finest clocks for this application.

Oddly enough, they also make some headphone amplifiers.
