There are tons of in-ear earphones on the market, and it’s become difficult for any particular design to stand out. Dozens of sets can match the MS100BA in comfort and noise isolation, offer the same accessories, and maybe can even outlast it in daily use. What they don’t offer is the sound of Phiaton’s balanced armature driver.

Okie dokie. After having measured seven Focal Utopias, some of them numerous times, two with serial numbers lower than the review pair, it now feels like I have enough information to draw some conclusions and move forward.

Dag nab it! I got so busy last week with the Focal Utopia measurements that I neglected to get the new Massdrop Noble X measured and listened to for a quick report before the drop. Sorry about that.

Well, there's certainly been a whirlwind of calls and emails around the old InnerFidelity lab this week. I thought it would be a good idea to put a fine point on where we're at, and talk a bit about where we can go from here.

After those episodes, conspiracy theories have abounded: Did somehow my brainwaves have managed to influence five strong-minded individuals in my direction. Was it valid for Bob to use different amplifiers for the two headphones? And why did Bob and Tyll's findings on the Utopia and LCD-4 differ so much?

Let's find out!

From time to time PR agents contact me in hopes of a review for their shiny, new gadget. Bone conducting sub-woofer bracelets and headphones with zipper cables generally don't interest me; most inquiries like this get a pass. But not long ago, I got a note from a PR agent asking me to take a look at the Aumeo Audio Next-Level Personalization product that claims to, "Personalize sound to your ears unique sensitivity and open up new worlds of richer, fuller sound." The Aumeo is basically a device that gives you a hearing test and then EQs the audio to compensate for your personal hearing response at various frequencies. Assisted listening is coming down the pipe; I figured I should have a listen.

It's kind of a long story, but here we are.

To my eyes, the Atticus is one half of a two part experiment by Zach Mehrbach, Founder and CEO of ZMF Headphones. His past has been dominated by the venerable, but in my opinion underperforming, Fostex T50RP planar magnetic driver. I guess Zach sees his future with a more modern—though more common—dynamic driver. It seems to me he's designed these latest two headphones as an experiment to find out just how good a headphone he can build using two different types of dynamic driver: the Atticus with a TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) diaphragm driver; and the Eikon with its bio-cellulose cone and rubber surround.

Sure, when reviewing the Bose Quiet Comfort 35 I downloaded the app to check it out. I thought the app was pretty useless...turns out the main purpose of the app was to check me out.

On the one hand you have Sony, Sennheiser, AKG, and the like mounting big bucks R&D efforts to grab at the various brass rings in the headphone world; and on the other hand you have a guy like Zach Mehrbach, Founder, CEO, and Chief Cook and Bottle-Washer at ZMF Headphones, who's artisanal approach is less mental and measurement, and more heart and art...lots more.
