I recently attended Summer NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) in Nashville, Tennessee. NAMM may be an unfamiliar name to you – it's a professional audio and music equipment convention, not consumer. And while the music industry has its own issues, if you want to see more diverse crowds, go to the pro-audio world. What you’ll also find in the pro-audio world is a lot of discussion about music, gear and audio that is friendly and open, even when people are disagreeing.

Many of you will likely have heard passing reference to the MicroZOTL from a few years back when a number of hand-made semi-DIY kits got some buzz in the community.

When I was just starting in the hobby one of the early headphones I aspired to own was the HiifiMan HE-400. I never did own one, but I recall being enchanted with it.

This is more of a mini-review than a full-fledged review, the reason being that Drop often revises and adjusts products based on community feedback. Consider this more of a sonic-preview of what you can expect form the first run.

I first encountered Focal headphones at the very first Head-Fi meet I went to.

Are headphones - all grown up? My big takeaway from CanJam Socal 2019 was just how far headphones have come in the last few years. There’s a real sense that the industry has ‘grown up’ and come into its own.

Meze made quite a splash with their Empyrean headphone, a top-tier planar magnetic model from the company that put out the 99 Classics was certainly something I had never expected to see.

I’ve mentioned that I enjoy Manley Labs gear before, but I had a chance to really sit down with the Absolute headamp this CanJam and take a deeper listen.

I stopped by the ZMF booth to say hi to the owners, Zach and Bevin Mehrbach, who are two of the nicest, most relaxed folks in the audio business.

Two companies that were part of the large Shenzen Audio booth were S.M.S.L. and Matrix Audio. The Matrix audio booth was showing a handful of all-in-one streaming, DAC and headphone amp models, as well as their flagship X-Sabre Pro. The Matrix models are mostly in the over $1,000 USD range, but looking at their feature sets it’s easy to see why.
